Wageningen Historical Procession
June 15, 2013
.
This year the municipality of Wageningen in Holland looks back on its 750-year anniversary. The celebration took place on June 15 with a large parade by many different groups to mark the city's history with remembrance of many major historical events.
.

.
Our Living History Group participated in this event, together with our Netherlands partner group, to re-enact the wartime evacuation of Wageningen on May 10, 1940, and the resulting severe impact of World War II on the town and its victimized population.

More detailed information on our Living History Group mission, its participation in this event and the fate of Wageningen during the war, can be found here:

The big event's procession consisted of many parade groups who depicted the history of Wageningen, extending from its emergence in the Middle Ages through centuries of development leading to modernity, the current age, and even views projecting the possible future.

.... Our historical reenactment group portrayed displaced town inhabitants realistically laden with suitcases, coats, belongings and bedding in backpacks, tricycles and bicycles during World War II. We moved slowly along the nearly 2-kilometer long route lined with about 15,000 spectators.

Throughout halts in the parade and afterwards, we engaged in several positive discussions with witnesses who remarked on the authenticity of our presentation.

.... Fortunately, the rain held off until the end of the parade. Later, after departing the long parade route, members of our combined German-Netherlands group all looked back on a very successful and acclaimed presentation.

We are proud to have made a significant contribution to the historical legacy of this courageous town by educating citizens of its ordeal and endurance during the Second World War II, which contributes to the strong bond of presentday friendship between our lands.
